Approach

Art4Life Therapy utilizes art making as a form of expressive therapy while the individual receives therapeutic reflection from the therapist. We combine traditional psychodynamic theories and techniques with an understanding of the psychological aspects of the creative process, especially the affective properties of the various art materials.

At Art4Life Therapy, the Phenomenological method, Jungian and Winnicottian psychoanalysis, along with the Cognitive-Behavioral approach are ways of understanding the Art Therapy process. Let’s not forget that a sense of spirituality, through ritual or ceremony, can also be achieved.

The therapists’ approach to Art Therapy relies on the understanding of the developmental stage of the individual, for example in codependence vs. independence. Emphasizing the co-creative aspect and the dynamic reciprocity of art making, within the therapeutic relationship, is elemental in our practice. The goals of art making, within the therapeutic space, mimic one’s life skills and his or her abilities to cope with everyday things. Ultimately, it is the person’s ability to self-determine, self-actualize and even master his or her own feats that brings a sense of empowerment.

Art4Life Therapy is based on the belief that the creative process is both healing and life-enhancing. Our Art Therapist uses the creative process and the issues that come up during Art Therapy to help the clients increase insight and discernment, manage stress, cope better with stress, work through traumatic experiences, increase cognitive abilities, have better relationships with family and friends, and to just be able to enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of the creative experience..
